Madeleine Collins PRIME MINISTER'S SCIENCE AWARD 2023

Prime Minister's Science Teacher Prize

2023 TE PUIAKI KAIWHAKAAKO PŪTAIAO SCIENCE TEACHER PRIZE:

Green Bay High School is extremely proud to congratulate Madeleine Collins (GBHS’s Assistant Head of Faculty, Science) on winning the 2023 Prime Minister’s Science Teacher prize – as announced at the prize-giving ceremony, held yesterday in Wellington.

Te Puiaki Kaiwhakaako Pūtaiao - The Prime Minister’s Science Teacher Prize is awarded annually to a teacher of science, mathematics, or technology, in a primary, intermediate, secondary, or kura kaupapa in New Zealand. This award recognises Madeleine’s outstanding approach to teaching and her work in science at both a regional and national level.

The Science Teacher Prize is valued at a total of $150,000 – of which Madeleine receives $50,000 and Green Bay High School receives $100,000 to be used for the development of science within our school. Madeleine has been a science educator for over 20 years and is passionate about creating an engaging and culturally sustaining learning environment in every lesson she teaches.

Madeleine has been involved with the Sir Paul Callaghan Science Academy since 2014, where she mentors teachers to create hands-on science programmes at their schools. She has also worked with a team of experts advising on the national curriculum for science, Te Mātaiaho.

Madeleine is both “humbled and excited” to win, emphasising that her success is built on support from many people: “Ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.”
