Proudly supporting our Māori students

Whānau Hui
Our Whānau Hui, held on Wednesday evening was buzzing with sounds of Year 9 students and their whānau getting together with our ‘Kahikatea’ team (Chloe, Chris, Jono, Sharon and Russell) to discuss how Green Bay High School can best support our Māori students on their educational journey.

There were three clear focuses for the evening:

1. Course Selection – we were able to provide all whānau with a copy of the Y10 Course Handbook and there was opportunity to ask questions and talk about our aspirations and potential pathways through to NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3.

This was a really productive conversation and we certainly felt that everyone came away feeling more confident about the process and more informed about their potential choices.

2. Ka hao te rangatahi – Wednesday evening was an opportunity to communicate the findings of our previous hui facilitated by the Ministry of Education team, collate that with the staff hui, and then start the conversation about what our mahitahi (joint plan of action) looks like moving forward.

Jointly students, staff and whānau collectively share similar aspirations for our tamariki. We want them to be safe, successful, happy and proud to be māori. We as a team acknowledge that as a school our first steps to delivering on those aspirations is to strengthen our communication and support networks as well as focus on student well-being. There were some great ideas shared on how to strengthen that network and we are keen to keep that dialogue open.

For those unable to attend on Wednesday, the evening’s presentation can be viewed here, and the course handbook can be viewed here. These items can also be found on our school website.

3. Finally we took a good look at what our students are up to in the realm of ‘homework’ and where there may be communication breakdowns or lack of clarity of expectation between school and home. It was an opportunity to discuss student progress and take some suggestions back to our teachers on how we can be better.

Thanks to everyone who attended and to all those who could not we look forward to seeing you next time. Our next hui is Term 4 Week 7 – Wednesday 28th November where we aim to look at what our students are doing on their devices, as well as respond to any issues raised at this week’s hui.
