NCEA and Term 4 Timetable

SENIOR STUDENTS
Congratulations to all our students for their work during the Exam Assignment period. As you already know, the information about NCEA qualifications is far more complicated in 2021 as a result of the extended period students have spent away from school. The aim of this newsletter is to provide some clarity about what the rest of the academic year will look like for senior students.

Unexpected Events Grades:  In 2021, NZQA have decided that they will award students Unexpected Event Grades (UEG) in case they are not able to sit their external examinations. Students will be awarded a UEG for all externally assessed standards where they have gained an Achieved, Merit or Excellence grade in a GBHS exam assignment. If a student is able to sit their external examinations, NZQA will award them the better of the two grades.

Students will find out their UEG from Wednesday, November 10th and results will be published on the parent portal on KAMAR. We will have a report available for students and whānau by the end of Friday, November 12th which will show a student’s achievement in each of their subjects and their progress towards the NCEA qualification and, for Year 13 students, University Entrance.

External examinations:  NZQA have confirmed that NCEA exams will still be running in Auckland this year. Green Bay High School students are encouraged to sit their external examinations if it is possible. By sitting the external examination, students have the opportunity to improve upon their UEG.

At Green Bay High School we recognise that we are living through times that have been difficult for many: for some students attending the final exam may cause even more heightened levels of anxiety. We will continue to support our students to make decisions about exams that support them, their academic plan and their wellbeing. The achievement report that will be available at the end of Friday, November 12th will provide really good information for students and whānau to talk about what their current achievement is and the opportunity that students have to sit their external exams.  It is important to remember that, regardless of whether they sit the external examination, a student will still receive at least their UEG.

Information about all of the NCEA exam logistics will be coming out to students and whānau in the form of a slideshow and video in the week before exams begin on the 22nd November.

Monday, November 8th – Practical Workshop Day (no other senior classes): Students who are studying subjects with a practical component (e.g. Arts, Engineering, Hospitality, &  Product Design) have been invited into workshops on Monday, November 8th. If senior students do not have a practical workshop they are encouraged to work from home, studying for their NCEA external examinations. Faculties will be using this time to complete the marking and moderation of work so that students can get their results back as quickly as possible and teaching can be clearly focused in the lead up to NCEA exams which begin on Monday 22nd November. Apart from practical workshops, no senior timetabled classes or senior zoom sessions will be running that day. The list of practical workshops for Monday is here.

What’s the plan for senior students for the rest of the year? On Tuesday, November 9th and Wednesday November 10th, senior classes will run as usual. From Thursday, November 11th through until Friday, November 19th, we will be running a timetable of subject workshops.

These workshops are for students to complete remaining internal assessment in their courses as well as preparation for external exams. Each workshop will be for a two hour block and there will be 3 sessions each day. A timetable will be available early next week so students can see which workshops they have each day.

Timeline for senior students:

  • Tuesday 9th November – timetabled classes are running
  • Wednesday 10th November – timetabled classes are running and 01ART Portfolio Day
  • Thursday 11th November through to Friday 19th November – subject workshops running for senior students (more details to follow early next week)

  • Monday 15th November – 03ART Portfolio Day

Hope you have a great weekend,
Ngā mihi nui
