Musicians, Songbirds and Music Extravaganzas…it’s all happening at Green Bay music!

The Auditorium is always alive with the sound of musical showcases throughout the year. Many students perform as soloists or in groups for assessment purposes and are widely supported by friends, family and the wider community. The music department continues to contribute to school assemblies providing live music and entertainment.

The 29th year of Smokefree Rockquest (2017) once again had a strong presence of Green Bay High School Music students – who won many of the regional prizes: Heidi Watson and Teuila Brown placed 2nd in the Auckland Solo/Duo Final and took out the prize for best song. Hadrian Mace and his band Silvera competed in the Auckland Regional Band Final, where Hadrian won the MAINZ Musicianship award.

Song-writing continues to bloom. Nine songs were submitted to the Play it Strange song-writing competition and from over 600 entries – three songs by Green Bay Music students were chosen in the top 40. Salima Sualah, Heidi Simpson, Teuila Brown and Heidi Watson all won a day of recording. These were included on the 2017 Play It Strange CD.

GBHS musicians perform at many community events, whether it be at the New Lynn Library for NZ Music Month. Or on ANZAC Day as part of the formal ceremony in Titirangi Village. June and October’s Music Nights are always very well supported by friends, family and the wider community.

Past pupils of Green Bay Music continue to thrive in the music industry with several students actively releasing music regularly and gigging around the country – applying the skills they learned at school into income generating work.
