Setting sights on success…

Jessica Dolphin (Year 9) was a guest speaker at KDEC, Kelston Deaf Education Centre, last night, where she presented a speech about some of the difficulties she has had to overcome as a deaf student. One aspect of her speech was about how she had to overcome the problem of bullying, when she was younger. But she was thankful for all the support she was given to become the confident young woman she is today.

Born without hearing in one ear, and limited hearing in the other, Jessica underwent surgery at a young age to receive a cochlear implant. Jessica’s teachers wear a FM device which allows sound to be transmitted directly to the implant, therefore enabling deaf students to participate in class activities. Jessica thrives in a mainstream environment at Green Bay High School.
