Tag Debut

Oceania Indigenous Invitational Cup
Excellence, Courage, Respect, Responsiveness РGreen Bay High School student Adam Ratana (Year 9) is a prime example of a young man who incorporates our school values into everything he does.

Adam competed in the 2019 Tag Oceania Indigenous Invitation Cup, held last weekend at Ngati Otara Park, in Otara. He was only player from West Auckland representing the (North/West) Aotearoa Maori under 14s Mixed Tag Team.

For the last 8 weeks Adam has put in a lot of dedication for his Tag debut, travelling to the North Shore for training twice a week. Preparation included learning new haka, to be performed at the start of each game as well as playing in two Sunday practice tournaments against the Aotearoa Maori (South/East) teams.

With a majority of wins under their belt (against the Under 14 Girls’ team, Under 14 Boys’ team, and Under 14 Mixed teams) and a 2-3 loss against the Under 16 Boys’ team, they went into the Oceania Indigenous Invitation Cup with pride and confidence.

In spite of the awful weather on Friday and Saturday, the team played with great heart and performed their haka with awesome mana – making it through to the semi finals and then playing in the final round for third and fourth place. Adam scored a try helping his team to come away with the win against Fiji to take out the bronze medal!

Tino pai rawa atu!
